African Americans in the west

Nobody will tell you that the west was a super progressive place with no problems. However it was far more diverse than its representative form of fiction would have you believe. There were black cowboys, homesteaders, mountain men, soldiers, police detectives, ranchers, hands, outlaws, miners, court officials. I wanted to elevate these people, to start to challenge the collective images of the west that we all conjure if/when we think of the west and westerns. I pulled together some images of African Americans in the west.

Plus, let’s be honest, they images are just cool.
